Music

Music is the language of us all -The Cat Empire

I started playing guitar before I was a teenager but I don't think I "got" it till a lot later when I picked up a harmonica and fashioned a holder out of an old coat-hanger. I found I could amuse myself for hours just jamming away with myself and losing myself in the music.

I've since taught myself a lot more about the harp, learned the bass and played with bands in all the countries I've lived. I've played lots of different styles, met great people and shared many good times.

I'm forever thankful I found music before it was too late so I'm always keen to share my love of music, especially the young people in the schools I've worked. In 2008 I started Open Mic Friday with my musical mate Paul Posterino while we were both working at the British School of Costa Rica.

Our idea was to give the students a chance to perform live in a low-stress, friendly atmosphere once a month at lunchtime. I've exported that concept to my current school in Johannesburg and the project just keeps on growing.

I currently play with a number of different musicians in Johannesburg including my band Marvericks Den and perform live whenever I can.
